Hal makes some excellent points. I'd be looking for a '60s-'70s 1 ton pickup truck. Oh, wait I'm already doing that. I'm still mad I let the '74 IH 3/4 ton slip away. Had a 345 that ran real good, and a 1 ton dually rearend.

One thing that'd probably be a good upgrade for an older truck like that would be one of the overdrive units. They sit on the output shaft of the transfer case on 4wd systems or transmission of a 2wd and are essentially gear splitters but also give you a higher top end. This would help especially if you had a truck with a super low first gear where second is often a tough jump up. The unit only works in 2wd which is really the only time you need it.

Personally my dream is a late '60s 1 ton 4wd IH with the 392 gas, or maybe swap in a newer diesel. Add an overdrive unit, paint it forest service green with those narrow tires like I remember. That'd be just great.
