I believe the International is a good antique truck for hauling a tractor. The 345 V-8, 392 V-8, and the 446 V-8 are tough engines and they are still available. They are easy to replace and install. If you install the high speed differential, you still have enough horsepower with these engines. I have done this conversion on my 1954 International. It had the 6 cylinder with low speed differential and 4 speed. I installed the 1968 345 V-8 and later installed the 1978 solid state ignition. International makes their distributors so that they are either clockwise or counter clockwise. You just have to replace the top half of the distributors and all the electrical parts with it, which are still available at your parts store. I tried buying a new distributor at dealers and they wanted $400; whereas, my conversion cost $45. To rebuild the four barrel is no different than anyother four barrel and parts are still available. After all this, I figure if I breakdown on the highway, I will not have any problem getting back on the road. I have had this vehicle to Canada, Ohio, and all over Michigan. In the future I plan on installing the 446 V-8 with the Allison transmition, which is an automatic.
