Must be doing something wrong. You are right about no park position. I think all of the four speed hydromatics with the low first gear worked that way. Took a little getting used to and will take a little rethinking but as I recall they worked fine that way. For sure it is a totally different engine than the 235 inch Chevs. Your mileage may vary
