Last I heard it was just the engines that had to be destroyed, that the trans (and apparently anything else) were being, or could be, stripped before crushing...
If correct, I assume the theory is the old engine is gone, reducing fuel usage, but if your own engine is still good, and you can"t afford a newer car, trans etc pieces may still be in wrecking yards.
