6cyl timing

Hello, Can someone tell me how to set timing on 223 ford 6cyl never worked on six before seems it would be a problem to turn distributer since vacuum line is steel ?? do you hook light to #1 plug?? with light hooked to # 1 it is showing mark is a quarter off balancer thanks Mike
