You might be suspicious of the timing chain if it is that far out. Check the damper, if it looks/feels ok put a wrench on the front of the crank pulley and see if you can detect how far you can move it back and forth in the slack of the chain. 7 degrees us usually considered good. if much more, it might be the problem.
