Depends on how hard you work it, the safe answer is not very long and then you'll start to blow the snot out of stuff. Should be able to fight the knock by upping the octane in your gas though.

I think, considering your situation with no tools and all, you need to ask yourself "Why am I trying to do this?" If its just to keep from replacing a bad egr valve, just replace the dang thing...
If its that you're trying to get some more power out of the motor, get good headers, a more open exhaust, a less restrictive air intake, MSD ignition, bigger carb, etc. Theres lots of other good things you can do that'll make a bigger difference without the worries you've got now.

If it were me I'd at the very least wait until I was someplace I had my tools.

That said this is a very common proceedure with Mercedes diesel cars and in that case results in some nice increases, but there we're talking about a 120hp engine to begin with, an increase of 1-5hp would be noticed, in your case is it worth it?
