Detroit dieselPosted by CASEPOWER on November 25, 2002 at 22:20:27 from (63.50.71.82):
I picked up 2 detroit engines today. They were 4 cycle inline 6 cylinders with chevrolet cast iron bell housings. I was not sure of the size, but was hopeing about 6.0 liter so I could put one in my 1984 chevy 1 ton that already has a 4 speed and would be easy to adapt. I have a 350 gas that is killing me on fuel with the 411 rear. I did some checking and found out that the engines were made by VM motori in italy for detroit. They are both the same and are 4.2 liter turbo diesels. I was sure when I found the size they wouldn't do what I needed. Then when I seen the torque I was wondering if it would have enough power. They are 125 HP and 347 foot pounds of torque. They didn't start building these engines untill 1996 so they are late models with inner cooled turbos. I got them complete with starters, alt, and all the little things. I have changed chevy gas engines to 6.2 diesels and can change to one of these. I just am not for sure if it will have enough power. I pull a 20 foot gooseneck and have 21,000 tags on the truck. What do you all think?? Is 347 Ft pounds enough??
