as you are talking bout a 74 i'm gonna assume you're talking bout a manual tranny...you want to look er over 1st and see if it's a top loader or side loader(does the top come off & shifter go in that or is there a side cover??)?...if you have a top loader,you can install a ton & 1/2 5spd tranny in er without too much trouble...should fit the bellhousing you already have...will have to change clutch disc to one that fits the larger splines & change the front universal joint to fit the larger yoke on tranny...if tranny has a side cover with levers hooked to a seperate shifter,you have an automotive type tranny...the new truck 5spd might fit but i,m not familliar with it...be lots more money anyway...
