Andy's analysis is correct. Your present tank is probably in as safe a position as possible, assuming it does not leak either liquid or vapor.

However behind the seat tanks are usually not very big. My 72 Dodge has one that is way too small. It requires a gas stop every 100 to 150 miles, which is an nuisance.

My Ford has dual tanks and can go 300+ miles between fill ups. Both trucks get about the same miles per gallon. I think the Ford is a lot better unit for taking long distances.

I thought about adding a rear tank to the Dodge, but ended up getting the Ford and now just use the Dodge around home.
