Leaving the ignition switch on without the engine running will not damage a HEI coil unless the distributor module is defective. A good working module will feed 30 amps to the coil for a tiny fraction of a second to saturate the coil windings, then will reduce the amperage to aprox 3-4 amps untill the ignition fires and the cycle starts again. This low amp standby mode will not cause excessive coil heating.
Too bad the parts store couldn't help you with the relay. I picked up two of those 12V 30 amp Bosch built relays today at a discount parts store today for $3 each. Do you have a John Deere AG dealer nearby? If so the 50 series JD tractors used a half dozen acessory relays in the cowl/insterment pannel of the tractors (4050,4250,4450,4650,4850 tractors) the Deere dealer is as cheap as the auto parts stores.
