From your mentioning TH400 and TH350 I assume you are talking a Chevy or GMC. I have looked at a lot of those old 4X4's and I don't remember ever seeing a 3 on the tree. Maybe the parts could be valuable to a "restorer". You never know. It is much easier to convert to an automatic from a stick than the other way around. I agree that the best way is to get all the parts from a vehicle similar to the one you have, so you don't have to fabricate much. It seems to me that all or most of those combinations used the TH350, which worked fine except in extreme towing conditions. Of course you could use the TH400, but I think that the tailshaft to transfer case adapter is from the aftermarket. Another option is using a divorced transfer case that uses a short driveshaft between the transmission and transfer case, but it involves much more fabrication than using stock parts. Stock is easiest and cheapest and probably most reliable. The manufacturer has done the engineering and testing. Good luck!
