I'd suspect the potmetal collar, that holds the shift lever, and is immediately below the steering wheel is badly worn, not letting the shift lever lift and engage the other lever. Also gives that feeling of looseness, we used to replace them about every 50,000 miles, just due to wear. And your brake master cylinder is probably leaking, running down the firewall.
