85 GMC help - Dump flatbed or ramp truck?

Posted by D13 on December 17, 2002 at 04:09:05 from (198.208.6.35):

1985 GMC 6500 just under 26000 (No CDL required) 366BBC and 5 speed. Used to have a contractor dump, they cut the frame and hoist brackets off just behind the rear wheels, have 13' behind cab. Looking to make a hauler to replace my 7000 lb trailer. I'm looking to haul up to 15000lb and 16' wheelbase (Oliver 1955 loaded w/cab)infrequently. Unit still has PTO and stub shaft on it.

I'm on a short budget, and the local dealer wants too much for his beater rollback, I'l just have to make or buy my own set up.

1. Any info on what it weighs without a bed?
2. Should I put a 14' bed with 4' angle tail on it, ond if so, what should the beams and decking sizes be? I've seen a lot of 3/16" steel deck but it seems to add a lot of weight. Then again, 2" oak gets heavy quick.
3. Or should I put a 16-18' steel/wood dump flatbed on it, and lift to angle for loading?

Either way I will put a pump unit on and use a hydraulic motor to run a winch on the bed, behind the cab.

Interested in your thoughts.
