OT- chevy 2 liter timingPosted by steve on December 25, 2002 at 18:26:28 from (204.246.222.188):
A little off the topic, daughter has a small 86 chevy with a 2 liter four banger. Stopped running and distributor timing is way off. I pulled the front cover to look at the timing chain. Marks dont match up. NOw for the big question. Any body got a book to double check this. The cam shaft sprocket has a "dot" on one tooth that i assume points toward the sprocket on the crank shaft. The crank shaft has a "o" on one tooth. I am assuming these two marks point toward each other, just like the big V8. When pointed at each other, the key on the crank shaft points toward the TDC mark on the cover. Right now everything is off about 3 teeth. PLanning on getting the sprockets and chain and installing next week. Dont have a book, dont really want to buy one. JUst need to confirm the "alignment". Just for curiosity sake, which location on the distributor cap is "supposed" to be no 1. My #1 is to the left side (toward radiator) on a front wheel drive car. 86,000 miles.
