What good are bedliners?

I have a 90 Ranger with 200,000+ on it. It had a bedliner in it when I bought it otherwise I would never have gotten one. My truck is ready for the bone yard and is all dented up and rusty but the bed looks like brand new. It sure will look nice in the junkyard though.
So again I would like to know what purpose the liner serves? Why not let the bed wear out with the rest of the truck.
