Back axle pops over rough terrain-1984 3/4 Chevy 4x4

Hi I got a 3/4 ton chevy and notice over rough terrain a poping noise at left rear tire, If I vigoruosly shake the truck side to side it make the same sound, took off wheel and see no damage cant see the axle though. is this serious and how do I fix it. thanks Bob
