I bought a couple of those radiant electric heaters that look kind of like a satellite dish. You just point them at the area where you plan to be, plug them in and turn them on. They feel great and work about as well with the door open as not. I don't use them all the time, only when I am planning on being fairly stationary for a long period of time. I am sure they use quite a bit of electricity, but most of the time they sit on the shelf, unused.

I hope to get one of those hanging natural gas furnaces in the next couple of years. I already have the gas piping in the garage, and the chimney would be easy. But I will not do this until I have the whole garage insulated and drywalled. All it takes is time and money! I have it mostly done and find that the attached garage stays pretty warm without any heat except from the vehicles and my electric heaters. It has not frozen in there this winter, which it did every winter before I did the insulation that I have.
