If the pushrod is removed, the action of the camshaft will boost the lifter out of its bore, which may starve the rest of the lifters for oil. Cadillac used a solenoid system that disabled the rocker arms, on their V4-V6-V8 engine in the 80s. When you had the head off, the valves looked okay? Before you check compression, have you tried squirting motoroil down the plug hole to try sealing the rings better? If the lifter could be raised off the cam, and secured with perhaps a screwtype hose clamp, what you suggest could be done, for a temporary cure, to keep from pumping oil out every orifice.
