Re: 460 Ford questionPosted by Mark A on February 13, 2003 at 06:05:37 from (66.118.25.250): In Reply to: 460 Ford question posted by FarmForward on February 12, 2003 at 19:39:26:
I drove a 1984 F-250 with a 460, with a 4 speed, and got about 11-14 mpg driving reasonably. Putting my foot in it got less. Your truck with the 5 speed and pulling gears should get at least 13mpg. Factor that in and you will use 2 gallons of gas a day at your local prices. The 460 is a good stout engine that has no real bad history that I know of. Sounds like a good deal if the price is right, having the 4x4, for what you need. The final drive gearing will also affect your mileage, whether you have a pulling gear or a highway gear. But personally, I dont feel the gearing is a reason to buy or stay away from any truck, or make enough of a difference to tell.
