Check the distributor for weak or broken springs. also check for dry/rusty/sticky advance weights and linkage. Do you put a couple of drops of oil on the felt pad under the rotor every year? This is important to keep the advance mechanism from seizing on the distributor shaft. If the advance is sticky it will hold the timing over advanced and kick back hard on the starter. You should be able to twist the rotor to the advanced position, and when you release it it should snap all the way back to the retarded position with a quick snap.
