Being the advance is working ok I would bet that GK is correct about the timing marks being inaccurate and that you are running too much initial timing. You need a tdc finder that you fabricate or buy from a speed shop. A tdc finder is simply a sparkplug shell that has its interior threaded so you can screw a threaded rod into it far enough so the piston strikes the rod before reaching TDC. How you use it is to set it so it stops the piston at say 10 degrees before TDC when turning the engine clockwise by hand. You then turn the engine counter clockwise untill it again contacts the piston. If the engine stops at 10 degrees after tdc,then the timing marks are accurate. If not you know how much the marks are off and in what direction.
