It sounds to me that your vibration damper has moved on the inside rubber and is giving you a faulse reading on the timing , this has happend before or it was put together wrong when new or the key way was cut wrong as was the case with a bunch of 360 and 390 's way back in the late 60's and earlie 70's drove us nuts till i did a tdc check and found that they were around 25 degrees retarded. Had lots of backfires and carb fires. But if you are knocken the starters out of them then you are to far advanced , A 460 ford should not have any more then a total of 35 degrees total advance at 2000 rpm and a curb timming of around 6 to 10 degrees at curb idel.
