I've got an '84 F150 with a 300, 3 speed with
O/D tranny and a 3:50 rear axle ratio. I pull a 4
horse trailer with it and also drove it halfway
across the country without a trailer at the
posted interstate speeds. It pulls the trailer
fine (got to use the clutch a bit gettin' started
'cause there's no granny gear) and gets 17+
mpg on the road empty. I did gut the cat and it
made a big difference! I'm running 28 in. tires
and no emissions pump or EGR system. If
you go to a V-8 you'll have to go to a 351 or
better to do any good 'cause the 300, in my
experience, is a much better truck motor than
the 302 V-8 since it makes it's torque in the
more usable range below 3 grand.
