Ignition Problems on 1931 Ford Model A Truck

Posted by Bob F. on April 06, 2003 at 16:12:52 from (209.152.68.47):

I'm having some problems keeping points in my 31 Ford Model A 1 ton Delivery Truck. I've been told that it is probably due to the newer gasoline formulations used today. That may or may not be the problem, but at any rate I was wondering if it is possible to put an electronic ignition kit on this truck. I've installed a few Pertronix coils and ignition kits on tractors in the past and the changeover is basically invisible unless you pull off the distributor cap. I'd like to keep this truck as original looking as possible but still want to be able to easily start it and use it. I'm not interested in hopping up the truck, I just want to keep it running for occasional parade use and hauling the neices and nephews around the place. None of the kits I've looked at go back that far on their spec. sheets. Has anybody out there attempted this and could you give me any advice or direction. One possible complication is the manual spark advance, but maybe this could be unhooked or bypassed somehow.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Bob F.
