I would probably build it out of lightweight 2 X 4 or 1 1/2 X 3 tubing with gussets will be as strong as your original. I have been in on building several. It will also have some flex. Make sure you drill some small holes at the low points for "weeping: any moisture out. We build race cars in this manner and add clips, etc. We don't have too much rust problem here.
