I have a homemade winch made out of a light truck or car diferential. The driveshaft goes into the center housing which is about 4" wide. The axle "trumpets" bolt onto each side. Something let go inside so that the pinion turns while the brake and drum are stopped. It has some resistance, not freewheeling as yet.

Does anyone have any idea what make/year it is, and what the problem might be? TIA
