Camaro 68 Drive train/custom rear end question

[ View Follow Ups ] [ Post Followup ] [ Return to Forum ]

Posted by Rick on April 20, 2003 at 22:47:36 from (198.25.50.2):

I have a 68 Camaro that has a 454 and Th400. Problem I have is the drive shaft is basically exactly the right length. Leaving only about 1/4" (maybe) of slip for the yoke to travel in the tranny. I am worried that if I hit a good bump the rear end will bounce pushing the drive shaft into the tranny busting it up. I unbolted the rear end and moved it back about 1/2" but the problem is it won't line up on the metal "button" on the leaf spring that way. I don't want to lose my rear end because it isn't installed properly on the spring so I am wondering how I can regain that 1/2" without having to cut my driveshaft (propeller) or modify engine mounts causing alot of work on exhaust and tranny mount. Is there a custom application I can use to gain that 1/2" I need? How much "slip" should i have on the yoke inside the tranny to be safe against bumps and bottoming out?

Thanks
Rick
