Air conditioning works intermittently.

The air conditioner on my 1989 Fird 1 ton truck operates normally for a few minutes and then shuts off suddenly,...When it is working it works very well...the air is cold and the blower motor works fine and is not noisy. It does this periodically during the day. what needs to be done to fix this? Thanks.
