Do you really need the duelly? Are you gonna pull anything larger? I have a 96 Ford F-250 with a powerstroke. Extended cab short bed with an automatic. I bought it used from a friend. He moved up to a 350 duelly 4-door. He was very disappointed in the difference in fuel mileage. Its a good truck, but he says he's at 11mpg. He said he wish he hadn't made the move.
You can pull a lot of weight with a 250. The heaviest I've pulled is a 20K corn pro gooseneck with an F-600 Ford dump on top. Ran a good 60mph no problem. The trailer weighs 6,000 empty, and the truck is about 9,500. This truck is stock, and has no mods on it at all.
Question is, which engine do you want? 7.3? 6.0? or the duramax? The new powerstroke 6.0 uses a variable vane turbo, and has to meet the new emission standards. I think it is just more to go wrong. I'd go with the 7.3 if you can find one. I have no experience with the duramax. Maybe someone else can shed some light on that one
