I have a 2001 Chevy K-3500, with 8.1 and 6 speed.
Just completed a trip on I-70 through Colorado with 7,500# on a trailer, 9.65 miles per gallon and I made good time, was able to run with the big dogs most of the time.
I considered the diesel before buying this truck, but didn't want to spend the extra $5,000.
If you check the specs. on towing cap., you will find that the 8.1 with 6 speed has more towing capacity than the diesel, not much, but still more.
