spooky truck

Any idea why the brakes on my 89 F 250 come on while driving, without even touching the pedal??
It seems to be all 4 wheels because the truck doesn't pull one way or the other when it starts to happen. Usually about 35-45 mph they will start to drag and get worse and worse until the truck comes to a full stop! If I sit still for a few minutes, pump the pedal or try backing up they(most times)will began to release and I can slowly get back under way. Today they stayed on slightly almost all the way home and yes they are hot and smell so it is the brakes. I'm a little spooked by the whole deal, any thoughts??
