Re: Carb backfiring and running a little HotPosted by Don C on June 01, 2003 at 02:44:55 from (210.187.240.40): In Reply to: Carb backfiring and running a little Hot posted by Week N Warrior (MS/MO) on May 31, 2003 at 18:03:53:
One thing that can make the engine backfire through the carb is the timing is too retarded, miss wired, or if you didn't break in the cam properly if you replaced it during the rebuild it could have a lobe on the exhaust that is worn out. If you didn't replace the cam during the rebuild it's very important to put the lifters back to the same lobe they came from. One tall tale sign of the cam lobe going is that the backfire will get progressivly worse with time until the engine won't hardly run at all. Not sure what kind of lifter system you have, whether they are adjustable or not but being out of adjustment can also cause that backfire or a cam lobe to wear out quickly.
