Backfiring back through the carburetor is usually due to the timing advanced too far ( ie, the plug fires while the intake valve is still open ) Retard the timing slightly then point it up a hill from a dead stop. If the firing back stops but it still pings, then it needs to be retarded slightly more. That is assuming that everything else is in good working order.
