Chevy 3/4 ton truck axle question, P.S. GREAT SITE!!!!!

I Have a 1984 3/4 ton chevy with 120,000. Is it normal to have some play in the back axle? Mine has a little sway (about 1/8 inch free play) and is noticeable when I rock the truck back and forth. The way it looks, the free travel is in the punkin of the rear axle, but I'm not sure. Anybody got any experiance with this? When I'm driving it I never notice anything except when I manually shake the back of the truck. If its not normal what will happen if I ignore it. Tahnks for the help and this is a great site!!!!
