Last winter I rebuilt a Mopar 383 for a 1 ton, 1971 Dodge truck and I had essentially the same problem. drove me nuts -- I even tore down the front of the engine to make sure I had installed the new timing chain correctly, as I was certain I had a timing problem. I finally found it, or rather it found me --very burnt rotor after only a few hundred miles. I had installed an aftermarket electronic ignition (have used these on several vehicles with no problems)and when calling the 800 number of the electronic kit manufacturer for help, they advied that "sometimes" the distributor that is in the engine is not "indexed" properly from day one and the engine will be OK, but NOT with the electronic ignition. Anyway, I bought a rebuilt distributor with points, etc, installed it, and the truck ran great!! (Anybody want to buy a slightly used electronic ignition??) When did you install the electronic ignition --during rebuild or shortly thereafter. Good Luck.
