I've never had an engine backfire on me through the carb because the timing was too advanced, not to say it can't happen. It's always been when too retarded, would have to think about it further as to why, but think it's actually the preceeding cylinder that is supposed to be getting fire and it goes to the next cylinder instead, when too retard. When too advanced it will tend to ping under load and not start after shutting it down.
