I had an '88 s15 with the 2.8 that had 150,000 miles on
before the body rotted off. I found that it would start to
have ticking lifters when the engine was lugging a little if I
needed to change the oil.
When I first got the truck from my folks it needed some
TLC and the first oil change was good for 1k miles
before it started ticking, the second was good for 2k
miles and then I was fine for 3k after that.
I'd change the oil and filter with a good diesel rated oil.
The diesel oils have extra detergents that'll help scrub the
engine clean.
My 2.8l called for 5w30 which I ran only October through
May. In the summer I ran 10w40 because it didn't leak as
much. My truck would leak a quart every thousand miles
regular as clockwork with 5w30 and a quart every 1500
with 10w40. It all ended up mixed with dirt on top of the
skid plate under the engine.

That was a good truck, had some power because I had
a 5 speed. A friend had an '86 Blazer with the same
engine but an auto and it was a pig. Mine got 25mpg
loaded or unloaded, highway or local. It was a great rig
to go to college with. I wish I'd fixed it back up instead of
"upgrading", but it would have nickel and dimed me to
death.
