mack truck

hi my boss has a 1978 mack that has a single trany with twin shifters the on has the five gears and the other one has high low and reverse.
My question is if you are shifting this truck should you do it like a truck with a 2 speed rear end or can you just go threw the gears and shift into high at the end.
I hope this does not confuse you guys
