Re: 1985 F150 engine knockPosted by jimks on July 14, 2003 at 16:00:09 from (65.150.168.48): In Reply to: 1985 F150 engine knock posted by jimks on July 14, 2003 at 10:55:37: Hey, thanks for the advice so far... I've thought about preignition, but it's not the standarp "pinging" sound- it's definitely only on one cylinder, and it's definitely louder when the engine is cold... don't get me wrong, the engine pings sometimes, but I think that's a different sound. Anyway, someone else suggested the timing gears, and maybe I'll have a look at that sometime... but I have to wonder why the sound varys according to engine load... Which leads me to wrist pins- I forgot to mention in my post that when I put rod and main bearings and inspected the piston skirts, I also pushed each rod off the crank and worked the piston pin to see if I could 'rock' it in it's bore- they all seemed tight. Sorry to keep throwing out suggestions, but this engine has me stumped... I've worked as a mechanic for about 8 years now... I reckon I OUGHT to be able to figure this out, but no luck so far. I guess if it's something important it'll eventually come loose and then it'll be easy to find. But timing gears... that sounds real possible- I had an oldsmobile engine one time where some of the plastic had come off the cam sprocket- made a nasty sound.
