Distributor Timing on 31 Ford Model AA Truck

I have posted a question or two here about this truck in the past and you folks have been real helpful, so here goes again. I have installed an electronic ignition kit on this truck and have gone thru. the directions provided to time the ignition. My problem is in trying to fine tune the spark advance. I have used the timing pin to find TDC on #1 cylinder and have set the rotor to the 5 O-Clock position with the spark advance lever up in the fully retarded position. The only way to start the engine is with the spark advance almost fully advanced. As I understand it, the engine should start with the spark advance lever in the fully retarded position. This is probably a stupid question, but how do I go about telling if the spark actually is advanced or retarded by looking at the rotor position in the distributor? I can't time the ignition the old fashioned way by looking at the points because there are no longer any points. Sorry this post is so long but any advice is appreciated.
Thanks
Bob F.
