Re: '53 6400 series two speed firewall mounted conPosted by Bob on August 13, 2003 at 18:02:50 from (66.231.125.96): In Reply to: '53 6400 series two speed firewall mounted control posted by Randy in IL on August 11, 2003 at 14:50:00: The hose you refer to as being thick as hydraulic hose is VACUUM HOSE. It is that thick and has a fiber braid in it so it does not collapse from the engine vacuum. The small hose under the dash is supposed to go to a diaphragm on a little two-speed gearbox attached to the back of your speedometer. The purpose of this is that it shifts to high and low range along with your axle, so the reading of the speedometer stays correct for each ratio. The adapter may still be there, or someone may have tossed it, and hooked the cable directly to the speedometer. The sytem is pretty simple... engine vacuum to shift valve through VACUUM CHECK VALVE. Small shift line to speedo, one or two larger lines to rear axle shift diaphragm. There may be another line tee'd in to engine vacuum side of valve that goes to a vacuum reserve tank. Make sure you have no collapsed rubber hoses or plugged lines. Check for clogged valve, or loose parts in valve. Diaphragm may have pinhole or tear. There is a possibility of mechanical breakage, or damage in the axle third member assembly, itself. Do you know if it is a GM Corporate axle, or an Eaton?
