I guess it would work providing you don't want to get anywhere very fast. Any of the previously mentioned engines isn't going to run even 3000 rpm, so you're going to need very high gears to get any speed at all. My great uncle installed a Massey diesel combine engine (Perkins?) in a Chevy van eons ago, but I don't know the particulars of the swap. I do seem to recall that the thing would get something like 35 or 40 mpg.
