1984 Chevy S10- intermittent cutout- help!Posted by Lynn Kasdorf on April 01, 2002 at 09:33:42 from (152.163.160.156): I have my late step-dad's cream puff 1984 Chevy S-10 pickup. A very nice truck with automatic and only 47k miles! I got it last summer and it ran fine until early 2002. The symtom is that i'll be driving along, and quite randomly the engine will start running rough, and then quit. Generally, if I shift to neutral, I can rev the engine and it sounds fine. But under load, it coughs and sputters. It goes through spells like this for a couple of minutes, then is often fine for 10 miles or so before it starts cutting out again. When it stalls, I can always get it restarted after a few tries. It runs for a few seconds, and dies. I do this about 5 times and it eventually clears out and runs ok. It sure sounds like water in the gas to me. But- I have run about 5 tanks of gas through it since it started doing this, and I always put a can or two of dry gas in. I can't imagine there is still water in the tank. And why would it come and go? I have replaced most of the vacuum lines (many of which were cracked), and I think I have no more vacuum leaks. I have also replaced the cap and rotor and plugs. What I don't know about are all the various emission control gizmos, and whether one of them may be bad. My haynes manual does not cover this in detail. I may have to actually take this to a repair shop (yikes!). ANY ideas?
