Transmission ajustment ??

I have a 63 Ford C750. The promblem i am having is the ajustment for the cluch peddle. When the cluch peddle is down , 4 inchs till it ingauges, Then cluch is working with a 1/2 play on the top.I can feel it slipping some. I want to get the peddle back down were it belongs. Off the transmission is the bolt to ajust the peddle. in what direction do i turn the the bolt. clock wise to the front or counter clockwise to the back of the truck. For the life of me i can't seem to get this right . It has been one of those weeks. Thanks for you help.
