Re: 1971 GMC smokes but excellent compressionPosted by Dave on November 06, 2003 at 17:35:21 from (24.164.107.75): In Reply to: 1971 GMC smokes but excellent compression posted by Jeremy on November 06, 2003 at 00:00:50:
If it is smoking right when you first start it up and then it clears up, Then you have valve stem seals going bad. That can be fixed without pulling the head with the proper tools. If it is smoking all the time then you probably have a bad set of oil control rings. The thing that most people don't realise is that oil will actually Seal compression rings, That is why so many old worn engines still show good compression but they smoke and burn oil. If you were to do a compression test on that engine and say get a 90 lb reading, You can add a cap full of engine oil to that cylinder and run the test again. If the compression comes up to say 115 or more then you have bad compression rings. If it stayed the same or just went up slightly then it would more than likely be a valve problem.
