The 454SS was indeed available in Red. It was also available in White. The first year for the 454SS (1990) was available in Black only, so I'm sure this is where you are confused.

As a side note, Chevrolet never offered an SS package for the 350 trucks. These were regular 1/2 ton P/U's that the dealers put stickers on. There was nothing special about them.

Several items on the 454SS are limited to that truck, and it only. Namely, the frame and Rearend are 454SS only, not being used in any other vehicle.
