You have the granny low and a 2-spd rear axle, right? I learned to drive in a '48 F-5 grain truck. It would handle it's rated GVW fairly well. It ain't a racing truck. If you're looking for low end torque, about your best bet would be to bore it a bit, maybe shave the heads to raise the CR, and add dual exhaust. For brakes, I agree, they bite. It's pretty easy to add a vacuum booster, that would give it the brakes of an F-6, which is a huge improvement. Unfortunately you still have a single cylinder master, so if you spring a leak in any line, you got no brakes. And finally, crawl back under that beast again. I can't believe there's no PTO blockoff plate on the tranny. It will be on the right hand side, I think 6-8 bolts on it. Finding a PTO unit for it is the tricky part. It takes a PTO with straight cut gears. I think any T-9 (non-synchro) or T-98 (synchro-silent) will fit the flatty.
