Now ya got me curious. I just looked in my '50 Ford truck owners manual, and it shows for the single ratio rear end you could have 5.14, 5.83 or 6.67 gear ratio. You might have the taller gears, that would reduce your pulling ability on hills. You should be able to find a 2-spd axle somewhere, that would give you either 5.83/8.11 or 6.33/8.81, which would help a lot. To match the wheel bolt pattern, I think you'll be limited to a vacuum 2-speed, which is kind of a pain to operate, but a good conversation piece. Make sure you get the control valve and the little transmission for the back of the speedometer off the same truck. As for a different tranny, I think (although I'm not certain) that the flathead and Y-block can interchange trannys, so you should be able to find a tranny with PTO that will fit easily.
