On earlier list we were talking about GMC V12. Detroits came up. GMC's deisel was designed in late 30's with many interchangeable parts to make it fit many applications in vehicles, equipment and just generators or power stations too. You could get many sizes and they would combine up to four engines on one stand with one power output shaft and so on. These were GMC diesels! I had a 3-71 in my 52 truck. Very big block for small engines. Later they became Detroits so other company's could buy and put in their brands of trucks, which many did. The whole company was later sold to Pensky and some newer models were designed that didn't catch on as well. Many models were too "Dirty" to run in new EPA policed world. So, YES, GMC made their own brand first, BUT, later Detroits were same engines, and even Later ones were new designs. There is a list for Detroits on www.yahoogroups.com if you want to join and talk your legs off about them. I was on when I had mine, haven't been there in quite awhile though!
